UK to boost troops in Afghanistan, announces Brown
By Gerrard Cowan
12/1/2009
The UK will boost its presence in Afghanistan by 500 troops over the coming weeks, Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced on 30 November.
The announcement came one day before President Barack Obama was expected to announce an increase of around 35,000 US personnel in the Afghan theatre of operations.
Brown outlined three conditions for the boost in mid-October. Each of these had now been met, he said. The first condition, that a way forward is found with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) coalition on "fairer burden-sharing", was being met through additional troop commitments from other countries, said Brown.
