UK plans to modernise frigate gun control
By Richard Scott
9/4/2009
The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has set out plans for the replacement of the Royal Navy's (RN's) GSA8 gun control system.
Originally manufactured by what was British Aerospace Systems and Equipment, GSA8 provides electro-optical fire control for the Mk 8 Mod 1 4.5 inch (114 mm) medium-calibre gun system fitted to Type 22 Batch 3 and Type 23 frigates. However, the system is based on 1980s technology and is now suffering from obsolescence, prompting the Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) organisation's International Guns, Missiles and Rockets team to solicit industry interest in a replacement or substantive upgrade.
GSA8 effectively comprises two separate subsystems: a passive surveillance subsystem, using a twin-axis General Purpose Electro-Optical Director (GPEOD) hosting thermal imaging, TV, and laser rangefinder sensor modules; and a gun control subsystem comprising a gun control console enabling the weapon operator to detect and track targets using the GPEOD, and assign the target to the gun control subsystem for engagement. It is also possible for each system to function totally independent of the other.
