By Doug Richardson
8/19/2010
Lieutenant General Sergei Karakayev, the new commander of Russia's Strategic Missile Forces (SMF), conducted a formal inspection of the 54th Guards Missile Division at Teykovo, about 240 km northeast of Moscow on 10-12 August.
Formerly equipped with Topol (SS-25 'Sickle') mobile intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), the unit has been recently rearmed with 18 Topol-M (SS-27 'Stalin') mobile ICBM systems and at least three of the new RS-24 mobile ICBM systems.
The inspection was Karakayev's first major engagement since his appointment as SMF commander was announced by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on 22 June.
