State of the union - India's demand for Telangana
2/10/2010
The Indian government's surprise announcement in December 2009 that it would create a new state of Telangana by dividing the existing state of Andhra Pradesh marked the culmination of 40 years of campaigning for a separate state.
However, hopes that the decision would assuage popular discontent in the region have proved unfounded; pro- and anti-Telangana protests have led to clashes since the announcement. In particular, unrest centres on the legal creation of the new state.
Although the government has announced that Telangana will be created, the Andhra Pradesh legislature must also pass a resolution approving this decision. Concerns over potential delays to the state's creation have therefore sparked violence.
