Police attack raises tension in South Ossetia
11/11/2008
Two Georgian policemen were killed and three wounded by explosive devices near the separatist region of South Ossetia on 10 November.
The EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM), which has been patrolling the areas around South Ossetia following a French-brokered ceasefire agreement ended the August conflict between Russia and Georgia, called the attack an unacceptable breach of the ceasefire that could dangerously escalate tensions in the region.
Although the presence of the EUMM should temper the risk of renewed large-scale conflict around the Georgian separatist regions, the risk of skirmishes and tit-for-tat attacks remains high and further violence is likely. 99 of 311 words
