NURC gets wrapped up in TANGLEX trial
By Richard Scott
10/28/2009
The NATO Undersea Research Centre (NURC) at La Spezia, Italy, has demonstrated and evaluated candidate technologies that could be used as part of a layered defence system to counter small boat threats such as suicide craft.
Known as TANGLEX, the two-day port and harbour security trial, conducted in La Spezia harbour, involved tests of deployable and static barriers, and two acoustic loud hailers. While NURC hosted the event, supporting participation was received from various branches of the Italian Navy, the European Commission, Defence Research and Development Canada, and Italy's Guardia di Finanza (the Economy and Finance Ministry's police force).
The trial event consisted of a full-day evaluation of the various types of RGES (Running Gear Entanglement System) equipment produced by US contractor Rescue Solutions International. These were followed by demonstration serials of the entanglement barriers and also the Sound Commander acoustic loud hailer from IML Corp.
