Nigers military ousts Tandja in patriotic coup
2/22/2010
Niger is now led by the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy (Conseil Suprême pour la Restauration de la Démocratie: CSRD), according to military spokesman Colonel Goukoye Abdul Karimou. The CSRD announced on 18 February that it would be led by Squadron Leader Salou Djibo. Meanwhile, it said Tandja is being held in a house in the grounds of the presidential palace.
The coup has been condemned by the UN and the African Union, with the latter suspending Nigers membership immediately following the coup. However, the coup has received considerable domestic support, and thousands attended rallies held in the capital Niamey on 19 and 20 February in support of the coup. Both opposition and coup leaders addressed the rallies, indicating that the civilian opposition may play a role in the evolution of the new regime.
