Malaysian academic plays down reports of arms race with Indonesia

A Malaysian academic has denied that Malaysia and Indonesia's procurement of new submarines is part of a developing arms race in Southeast Asia.
Dr Tang Siew Mun, a lecturer at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's School of History, Political and Strategic Studies, was quoted by Malaysia's state-controlled news agency as saying that funds will continue to limit procurement strategies in the region.
"Are we worried? Should we buy more arms to compete with the Indonesians? The answer is no," said Mun. "The point is that even if we want to compete and have an arms race with other countries, we do not have the money to do that... more importantly, we do not have the need to do that because we don't see them as enemies." 124 of 310 words
