Lockheed Martin rolls out new THAAD systems
By Daniel Wasserbly
4/17/2009
Lockheed Martin officially rolled out key production elements of its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in a 13 April ceremony.
Company representatives unveiled THAAD's first ground segments - the weapon system launcher and fire control and communications units - to be manufactured on the production line at Lockheed's launcher integration complex in Camden, Arkansas.
THAAD launchers and fire control units are built over an 18-month period, with final assembly to occur about every two months, Tom McGrath, Lockheed Martin's vice president for THAAD, told reporters after the ceremony.
A THAAD suite is currently procured with interceptors, three launchers, fire control and communications units (usually in two trucks) and Raytheon's AN/TPY-2 radar. According to a Lockheed statement, an operational THAAD battery is scheduled to be established at Fort Bliss, Texas, by the end of 2009.
