India places additional Arjun order

The Indian Army has ordered an additional 124 Arjun main battle tanks (MBTs) after the indigenously designed platform recently outperformed the Russian-origin T-90 MBT in extended comparative trials in the western Rajasthan desert.
"After many years of trials and tribulations, it [Arjun] has now proved its worth by its superb performance under various circumstances like driving cross-country over rugged sand dunes, detecting, observing and quickly engaging targets and accurately hitting targets - both stationary and moving - with pin-point accuracy," Ministry of Defence spokesman Sitanshu Kar said in a statement released in New Delhi on 17 May.
The new order, he added, would be "over and above" the existing one for 124 Arjuns, which are being inducted into two regiments in the Rajasthan desert region.
Kar declined to put a price on the MBT order, which will be completed by the state-run Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) at Avadi in southern India.
