Harris develops more intuitive haptic controller
By Damian Kemp
8/27/2010
Harris is hoping to have an improved version of its Wireless Haptic Manipulation System (WHMS) ready for demonstration at the Robot Rodeo at Fort Benning in mid-October.
The WHMS is capable of being set for variable resistance so the operator has a more intuitive feel for the device they are operating and its speed of operation can be adjusted to enable more precise movement of an unmanned ground vehicle's (UGV's) robotic arm and grip.
The force-feedback or haptic controller is a pistol-grip design with a trigger to activate movement and a thumb-controlled side button to open or close the gripper. It is powered by two BB-2590 lithium ion batteries one of which is fitted to the UGV-mounted payload and the other to power the controller providing more than two hours of usage.
