Greece braces for hot summer of discontent
3/9/2010
Greek unions announced a third major general strike for 16 March in response to the government's decision to roll out further austerity measures under pressure from the EU.
Thousands of people took part in the previous general strike on 24 February that ended in violent confrontation in Athens between police and protestors. Further clashes took place as the austerity measures were pushed through parliament on 5 March.
While the latest measures were welcomed internationally, they are deeply unpopular at home. Discontent is likely to grow as the cuts are implemented, with deeper structural reforms likely to be necessary. Although the government has a healthy majority, unions and militant groups are unlikely to curb their protests and there is a strong chance that future protests will be marked by further and more widespread violence.
