The United States has encouraged India to sign outstanding defence agreements between the two countries during Defense Secretary Robert Gates' visit to New Delhi during 19 -20 January.
India's government news service Doordarshan reported on 20 January that Gates, who met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 19 January and Defence Minister A K Antony on 20 January, is expected "to push a reluctant India" to sign a Logistics Support Agreement (LSA) and a Communication Interoperability and Security Memorandum of Agreement (CISMoA).
The LSA permits armed forces of both countries to enjoy reciprocal use of facilities for maintenance, servicing, communications, refuelling and medical care.
The CISMoA requires US defence equipment purchasers to ensure that equipment they supply to India is compatible with other US systems.
Meanwhile, a statement by the US Department of Defense quoted Gates as saying: "Not getting these agreements signed is an obstacle to Indian access to the very highest level of technology."
