Draft UOR vehicles into UK core procurement programme, urges general
By Andrew White
2/5/2010
The UK's outgoing director of battlespace manoeuvre and master general of the ordnance at the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has called for urgent operational requirement (UOR) vehicles to be drafted into the country's core procurement programme in order to maximise their capabilities.
Addressing the International Armoured Vehicles conference in London on 2 February, Major General Chris Wilson hailed the UOR vehicles mostly the UK's 'canine' family of mine-protected vehicles acquired for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan as life-savers but urged the MoD to "procure identical vehicles to make it a viable capability".
Gen Wilson described how such systems had been provided in sufficient quantities to equip a brigade for theatre-specific operations, but warned that the ad hoc UOR procurement process would involve "considerable cost" for the MoD.
