DARPA/university team works on technology for micro aerial vehicles
By Gareth Jennings
2/4/2008
The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is working with Oklahoma State University (OSU) to develop technologies for use in micro aerial vehicles (MAVs), including plasma actuators and inflatable wings.
DARPA's objective for its Nano Air Vehicle (NAV) programme is to "develop and demonstrate an extremely small (less than 7.5 cm), ultra-lightweight (less than 10 g) air vehicle system with the potential to perform indoor and outdoor military missions" with a particular emphasis on "urban mission operations".
Key objectives for the programme include the development of conformal, multifunctional structural hardware and strong, light, aerodynamic lifting surfaces/rotors for efficient flight at low Reynolds numbers (<15,000). According to DARPA, the programme will advance technologies that enable collision avoidance and navigation systems to be used in GPS-denied indoor and outdoor environments, and will develop efficient methods for hovering flight and the deployment or emplacement of sensors.
Flight-enabling system technologies for DARPA's MAV programme include: aerodynamic design tools to achieve high lift-to-drag aerofoils; lightweight, efficient propulsion and power subsystems; guidance, navigation and communication subsystems; and advanced manufacturing and innovative subsystem packaging and configuration layout. 181 of 447 words
