Central African Republic rebels attack northern town
11/30/2009
Convergence des Patriots Centrafricains pour la Justice et la Paix (CPJP) rebels claimed they had taken the northern town of Ndele in the early morning. However, an army source, who spoke to AFP at around 1430 local time (1330 GMT), said fighting continued and that the rebels had been driven back by government forces. A BBC report on 27 November said the military was patrolling the town.
The CPJP was a little known group before January 2009, but has been involved in earlier attacks this year. It has claimed that it was the government's silence on talks since August that led to the latest offensive, adding: "We count on progressing in military terms if the government does not immediately engage in negotiations."
