Bolivian president shaken by local protestors

On 29 July, the local civic committee in the city of Potosí declared a strike in support of a number of regional demands. Thousands of people turned out to support the committee and hundreds staged hunger strikes. The scale of the protests was clearly not anticipated by the government of President Evo Morales, and reflected both the poverty of Potosí and unresolved social tensions in Bolivia.
