ATC, ramp issues hinder Haiti's relief effort

The 12 January earthquake that ravaged Haiti has seriously damaged the air traffic control (ATC) tower at Toussaint L'Ouverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, rendering it unusable and complicating the already fraught humanitarian aid effort.
"It's out of commission and non-operational," said International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Public Information Officer Denis Chagnon. Initial reports suggested the tower had collapsed during the 7.0 magnitude earthquake, but these were unfounded. US military authorities told Jane's on 19 January that they are installing a mobile ATC tower.
Other airport infrastructure had actually emerged relatively unscathed in relation to the devastation elsewhere, with the terminal building continuing to operate, albeit with wall cracks. Its runway, apron and taxiways were also largely undamaged. Haitian President René Préval has spent time working from the airport as his presidential palace and private home were seriously damaged.
