An IHS Jane's newsletter | July 2011
Every quarter IHS Jane's magazine and online news sources publish hundreds of articles that provide critical defence and security news and analysis. Here are some of those that readers have identified as being particularly incisive, insightful and effective:
Dead Man's Shoes
Jeremy Binnie
Jane's Intelligence Review
Article first appeared online 19th May 2011
What's the story?
The killing of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has left the transnational jihadist movement without a central figurehead. Jane's looks at the candidates who may try to fill his shoes and what his death means for Al-Qaeda's future.
Why come to Jane's?
Jane's interviewed leading analysts to provide an overview of the current speculation surrounding the Al-Qaeda succession process. The article concludes that Bin Laden's death will undermine the Pakistan-based leadership's centrality in what has developed over the past seven years into a network of regional affiliates, allied groups and sympathisers and that Al-Qaeda's image as a powerful international organisation may fade in the absence of a core group that drives international conspiracies against the US and its allies.

What's the story?
Wreckage left behind after the raid of Osama Bin Laden's compound suggests that the US forces used a hitherto-classified helicopter type in the operation.
Why come to Jane's?
Jane's used the expertise of its aviation desk to analyse images of the crashed helicopter, which was widely being reported at the time as being a standard UH-60 Black Hawk. From these images it quickly became apparent that this was not a standard helicopter, and that it displayed design characteristics not seen on any other helicopter type known to be in service. The international media picked up the Jane's analysis on this helicopter, resulting in a series of high-profile television and newspaper interviews with the likes of CNN and the Times. This story was a great example of not only the timeliness of Jane's copy (it was one the first in-depth analysis of the photos to be published), but also the depth of knowledge and expertise that its writers can bring to bear on such a subject.
Jane's Terrorism & Security Monitor
Article first appeared online 6th May 2011
What's the story?
A series of pipeline bombings in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula have highlighted the vulnerability of Israel's energy supplies at a time when its enemies in the Gaza Strip are trying to acquire guided missiles that are capable of destroying its only offshore platform that is currently producing gas. Jane's examines the implications of insecurity in the Sinai in the wake of the Egyptian uprising.
Why come to Jane's?
Produced from collaboration between IHS Energy analysts and IHS Jane's terrorism and military analysts, this story demonstrated the capabilities of IHS. It also combined satellite imagery acquired by
Jane's with mapping information taken from IHS to present data in a highly informative graphical format.

What's the story?
A spreadsheet of the NATO and Coalition air assets (aircraft types, numbers, roles, units) involved in the opening stages of the Libyan air campaign.
Why come to Jane's?
A number of IHS Jane's resources were used to consolidate as much of the open-source information that was available as to the types and number of aircraft that were being used in the early stages of the Libyan air campaign. This highly detailed picture of the early stages of the conflict gave a snapshot of the air war and gave the reader a sense of which nations were contributing which assets (broken down into the different air arms involved) and from where they were operating these types.

What's the story?
An assessment of the progress of the US-UK and US-Australia defence trade co-operation treaties, with the publication of a likely deadline for the long-running accords.
Why come to Jane's?
Despite the coverage generated by this subject in the wider world, this has been the only article to highlight the reason for current delays to final signature, and to question whether the treaties should indeed be enacted.
