Police Review readers call for Jacqui Smith’s resignation
London, 19 December 2007 – Over 1,000 police officers have called for Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to resign, following her refusal to award officers the full 2.5 per cent pay increase as recommended by the independent Police Arbitration Tribunal.
In an exclusive internet poll, nearly 98 per cent of Jane’s Police Review readers answered ‘yes’ to the question: “Should the Home Secretary resign over her decision on police pay?”
And in a poll last week, 81 per cent of Jane’s Police Review readers answered positively when asked whether they supported officers being given the right to strike following the Home Secretary’s pay rise.
Meanwhile the Police Federation of England and Wales is organising a demonstration in Westminster. Over 10,000 police officers are expected to march through London next month to express their anger about this year’s police officer pay rise.
Jan Berry, chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, said the ‘bobby lobby’ would be “a dignified demonstration” of off-duty officers showing how they feel.
