Thousands of supporters of Ukrainian presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych gathered to celebrate his victory in the presidential election campaign, 8 February. (PA)
With just over 98 per cent of the second-round presidential election vote counted, Viktor Yanukovych has 48.4 per cent of the vote, with Yulia Tymoshenko on 46.1 per cent.
The bitter nature of the campaign and the narrow margin of victory means that Tymoshenko is likely to challenge the result.
Yanukovych's Party of Regions will either need to forge alliances with other parties in parliament to gain a working majority, or call fresh general elections later in the year.
