Zimbabwe's ruling party loses its hold on parliament

04 April 2008

EVENT

The ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) of President Robert Mugabe has lost its hold on the House of Assembly.

Results for 207 out of the 210 parliamentary constituencies released by Zimbabwe's electoral commission indicated opposition leader Morgan Tsvangarai's faction of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) had secured 99 seats in the House of Assembly, with ZANU-PF taking 97. It remains unclear whether the incumbent would be facing his first ever second-round run-off in the presidential elections.

FORECAST

While the opposition will be celebrating the downturn of ZANU-PF's fortunes in the elections, concern remains about the delays in announcing the presidential results.
