04 March 2009

On 3 March, during its international tour of Pakistan, the Sri Lankan cricket team was targeted in a terrorist attack in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, which injured five players and killed approximately five policemen.

The incident took place between 0330-0400 GMT as the Sri Lankan cricket team's bus was heading for the third day's play in the second Test against Pakistan.

According to preliminary reports, approximately 12 masked gunmen armed with Kalashnikov rifles attacked the team bus near Ghadaffi stadium. The bus was escorted by several vehicles carrying police and commandos. The attack triggered a 25-minute gun-battle between the militants and security forces.
