Hizbullah links claimed in Colombian drugs operation

22 October 2008

On 21 October, the Colombian Fiscalía General (Public Prosecutor's Office) released a press communiqué detailing the dismantling of an international cocaine trafficking and money laundering network that was supposedly diverting funds to Lebanese Hizbullah.

The claims of financing links between drugs-related criminals and Hizbullah are plausible, although this does not pre-suppose Hizbullah terrorist-oriented activity within Latin America itself.

Nevertheless, Hizbullah has previously been implicated in terrorist actions on the continent - most notably bombings against the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires (1992) and an Argentine-Israeli mutual association (1994).
