Kenya appoints prime minister and cabinet

14 April 2008

EVENT

Raila Odinga has officially been named prime minister of Kenya, following President Mwai Kibaki's announcement of a new coalition cabinet on 13 April.

The breakthrough announcement, coming more than a month after the signing of a internationally mediated, post-election peace deal on 28 February, reportedly followed private consultations between Kibaki and Odinga. The formation of a coalition cabinet, equally representative of Kibaki's Party of National Unity (PNU) and Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), was a provision of the 28 February power-sharing deal, as was the creation of the post of prime minister. However, continued wrangling over key ministries led to delays and renewed tensions.

FORECAST

The formation of the coalition cabinet is another important step towards starting to stabilise the country. However, the post-election violence has led to deep rifts in Kenya and reconciliation will take a concerted effort by leaders to work together.
