On 2 October, the Colombian Ministry of Defence confirmed the success of joint military-police operations against the FARC Central Command in a southern region of Tolima department.
At least eight FARC combatants were confirmed killed in the operation on 1 October, although that is expected to rise as high as 40, as a number of guerrillas were believed to be in the camp when the air strike caused part of a mountain to collapse on it.
The operation confirms that the military's strategy is to increase its pressure on FARC leader Alfonso Cano and the other members of the FARC's ruling secretariat, particularly military leader Mono Jojoy, in an effort to destroy the organisation's leadership.
