Anti-terrorism training: Prevent

By Andrew Staniforth

20 May 2009

The only way to fully protect the public from harm is to stop people becoming terrorists. The UK's strategy to counter international terrorism, known as Contest, continues to focus upon the key pillar of 'Prevent'. It recognises an uncomfortable truth that some people in our communities are being drawn to the propaganda promoted by recruiters and facilitators of the Al-Qaeda ideology.

The scope of Prevent is considerable, with work not only targeted towards our local communities but also communities overseas. Police officers must believe that this is a real and present threat and they must be alert to issues of radicalisation and recruitment for terrorist purposes.
