Planned protests will pose a security risk, insists Heathrow chief

By Ben Vogel

15 August 2007

The managing director of Heathrow Airport has warned that planned direct action will create a clear safety and security risk, as a week-long protest began against the proposed expansion of the airport.

Operator BAA had earlier won an injunction from the High Court banning certain groups from taking part in the Camp for Climate Action.

Up to 250 people had already gathered at the camp near the village of Sipson close to the northern perimeter at Heathrow and organisers expect more protesters to join over the coming week.

"There will be a day of mass direct action aiming to disrupt the activities of the airport and the aviation industry, but in the interests of public safety there will be no attempt to blockade runways," according to the Camp for Climate Action's website.
