Forensic science review calls for better standards and training

AN independent review into low template DNA analysis has found the method is sound but warns about standards and training in forensic science.
The review, carried out by Prof Brian Caddy, from Strathclyde University, highlighted concerns about the quality of work in forensic labs at larger forces and called for standardised training for lab workers and those involved in recovering DNA samples from crime scenes. Concerns were also raised about funding for forensic research.
The review, published last week, has validated the low template DNA method, in accordance with accepted scientific principles. The method involves analysing minute amounts of DNA that are too small for standard DNA profiling.
Last year, low copy number analysis, one of three techniques in low template DNA analysis, was temporarily suspended after its validity was called into question in the Omagh bombing case.
