Muslim communities close ranks to police
03 March 2008
People in Muslim communities know who the criminals are in their areas but are reluctant to tell bobbies on the beat, the first ever Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) counterterrorism conference heard this week.
Prof Martin Innes, who has researched Islamist fundamentalism for ACPO, said despite higher levels of social efficacy and cohesion in Muslim communities, people are less likely to pass on information to the police.
The study, which asked what Muslim communities in the UK thought of policing and the service's counterterrorism effort, saw 101 in-depth, face-to-face interviews being carried out in Oldham, Birmingham and London, with a further 210 respondents being surveyed by phone.
