US Hunters plug into common datalink

By Gareth Jennings

04 January 2010

The US Army has upgraded its Northrop Grumman MQ-5B Hunter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with the Tactical Common Data Link (TCDL) in support of the Afghanistan surge.

The TCDL increases data transfer rates and doubles the communications range on the MQ-5B, enabling additional payload capabilities, according to Northrop Grumman. The addition of this technology means that Hunter now complies with the US military requirement for all UAVs to have encrypted data and video links.
