R&D heads Pakistan's bid to promote self-sufficiency

By Jon Grevatt

09 April 2008

Pakistan's new government has announced plans to further modernise the country's state-owned defence industry in a bid to increase self-reliance.

Central to the modernisation plans, according to Pakistan's Federal Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain on 7 April, are defence research and development (R&D) activities.

In comments published by Pakistan's government-controlled news service, Hussain said that "steps would be taken" to further upgrade and modernise the country's defence industries and that R&D would play a "vital role in [the] modernisation process".
