Paris Air Show: US waits on JASSM 'fix'

By Caitlin Harrington

21 June 2007

Secretary of the US Air Force (USAF) Michael Wynne has said he would like to give a second chance to the troubled AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM) rather than cancel the programme.

The USAF is due to decide whether to salvage the JASSM programme this month following its 42 per cent failure rate during recent test firings.

However, Wynne said on 19 June at the Paris Air Show that he is inclined to see if the JASSM problems which are tied to Global Positioning System (GPS) failures can be fixed rather than seeking alternatives.

"If you come 95 per cent, it is very, very hard to see your way clear to jumping [to another type of missile]," he added.
