South Korea extends second invite for fighters

By Jon Grevatt

25 April 2007

South Korea's Defence Acquisition Programme Administration (DAPA) has made a second announcement inviting foreign bids for its contract for 20 multirole fighters.

Lockheed Martin and Eurofighter pulled out of the bidding process before the 18 April 2007 deadline after the first announcement in early March, leaving only Boeing to bid for the USD2.4 billion contract, which represents the second phase of the South Korean next-generation fighter project.

The follow-on announcement on 23 April, a requirement under South Korean law, stated that interested companies must submit a proposal by 10 May.

South Korea purchased 40 Boeing F-15K fighters, a derivative of the F-15E, as part of the first phase of the project, in a deal worth USD4 billion.
