David Greenman began working on the forerunners of Jane's Merchant Ships as assistant to E C Talbot-Booth more than 40 years ago. Talbot-Booth originated the books in the early 1930s, and also specialized in ship recognition. In 1956, he founded the Ship Recognition Corps. This is a volunteer organization that aims to teach its members the principles of merchant ship recognition. David Greenman has been the director of the Corps for the past 21 years and the editor of Jane's Merchant Ships for 29 years.
