Jane's Police and Homeland Security Equipment
The reference source for homeland security equipment.
Content Structure
This title describes specialist equipment which is currently in service with, or expected to come into service with, law enforcement or homeland security agencies. Coverage does not include equipment of a generic nature.
This title is divided into seven main sections which are detailed below. These main sections are further divided into subsections covering various related products associated with that specific area of police and homeland security equipment. Equipment and systems are listed alphabetically under the country of origin, which is also entered alphabetically by contractor name.
Structure
- Biometrics - This section describes equipment which can assist in identifying individuals by their physical characteristics, such as facial recognition, fingerprints, iris or retina scan and voice recognition.
- Operational Equipment - This section describes specialist vehicles, e.g. armoured and surveillance vehicles; surveillance equipment, including bugging and anti-bugging devices; search and detection equipment, including speed detection and forensic; rapid entry devices, including explosive entry; and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) equipment.
- Personal Protection - This section describes body armour, shields and helmets to protect the users from ballistic, edged weapon or blunt trauma threats. It does not include uniform worn for routine policing.
- Riot and Crowd Control - This section describes equipment designed to tackle public disorder.
- Firearms and Weapons - This section describes pistols; sub-machine guns and assault rifles; sniping rifles; shotguns and carbines; weapon tactical accessories; and less-lethal weapons.
- Communications and Security Equipment - This section describes communications equipment; and computerised systems.
- Access Control, Perimeter Protection and Structural Armour - This section describes equipment to restrict access by persons or vehicles; perimeter protection; and target hardening by use of structural armour.
- Contractors - This section lists all of the manufacturers whose equipment is included in this reference book. This gives their mailing address and (where available) their contact telephone and facsimile numbers; e-mail address and website.
Record Structure
The following main headings are used within each record:
- Title - This gives the contractor name and the name of the product
- Description - Under this heading a description is given of each product with sufficient detail to explain the purpose and functioning of the item. In certain circumstances some features of the product are not described as disclosure in a publicly available source may jeopardise the safety of operatives or compromise operational effectiveness.
- Specifications - Under this heading the main technical features of the product, where these are relevant to evaluation, are described in metric units of measure.
- Status - This describes the current status of the product. Whether it is in production or available and whether or not it is in service. It should be borne in mind that manufacturers are often bound by contract not to disclose their customers and police and security forces frequently prefer not to advertise their precise inventory.
- Contractor - The name of the manufacturer. Contact details for each manufacturer is found in the Contractor index.
Images
A photograph is provided for each product wherever possible. Line drawings and graphics are also provided in some cases. Credit is given to the copyright holder of each image where it is known. Images are annotated with a seven digit number which uniquely identifies them in Jane’s Information Group image database and the year of first publication in the bound copy is usually included.
Space considerations in the bound copy of this title results in a maximum of one image being printed for each product. Readers may wish to know that the electronic version of the title contains thousands of additional colour images of the products.
Other Information
There are two indices to assist readers in locating a specific product. If the name of the product is known then it can be found in the Alphabetical Index. If the manufacturer’s name is known then all of the products are listed in the Manufactures’ Index.
