Jane’s Land-Based Air Defence

Content Structure
Jane’s Land-Based Air Defence 2007-08 has changes and updates that reflect on a worldwide base the modern ground-based air defence environment.

Structure
For ease of reference Jane’s Land-Based Air Defence is divided into the following sections:

• Man-portable surface-to-air missiles
• Self-propelled anti-aircraft guns
• Self-propelled anti-aircraft guns/surface-to-air missile systems
• Self-propelled surface-to-air missiles
• Universal (multipurpose: land/sea/air) missile systems
• Air defence laser weapon systems
• Towed anti-aircraft guns
• Towed anti-aircraft gun sights
• Static and towed surface-to-air missile systems
• Shelter- and container-based surface-to-air missile systems
• Anti-aircraft control systems
• Inventory
• Contractors

Record Structure
In order to standardise each record or entry within the publication, a set proforma will be followed.

• Title
  This will always contain the primary contractor for the system followed by the name or designator of the weapon
• Development
  Where applicable this heading covers the history of the development of a specified item of equipment up to the point where it entered service and, in some instances, details of any major development after entry into service
• Description
  Under this heading a detailed technical description is given of each system, in so far as military and commercial confidentiality allows. Where equipment integrates with other equipment or systems, this is also noted.
• Specifications
  Under this heading the main technical parameters of systems are listed, including dimensions and operating parameters (where available) and, in the case of weapons the destructive charge and so on
• Variant
  Most missile systems undergo upgrades, modifications and technology changes. This normally leads to what the primary contractor calls a variant of the basic weapon. If the system variant becomes the primary weapon and the basic is removed then a separate entry will be listed
• Status
  This lists the current status of the system, whether it is under development, on order, undergoing trials and so on where known. This is further amplified in certain sections by a table listing the operational platforms carrying the equipment
• Contractors
  Contained in this section will be the primary contractor and principle sub-contractors.

Images
Photographs are provided for equipment wherever possible, however where images are not available, then line drawings and graphics will be substituted or may complement certain entries. Images appear with a seven-digit barcode to identify them within Jane’s image database.

Other Information
Regular readers of Jane’s Land-Based Air Defence will have noticed the reluctance of the Editors to remove older systems which remain operational within inventories of those non-countries of origin. Furthermore, as Jane’s Land-Based Air Defence is the world’s primary reference publication for air defence most users find it essential to understand those older systems and technologies before attempting to assess modern weapons with newer technologies. Unless a strong case can be put before the Editors then systems like the Chinese HQ-2 (ex-Soviet S-75) which were designed 50 years ago will continue to be included in Jane’s Land-Based Air Defence until scrapped entirely.
