Jane's Infantry Weapons

Large and small conflicts around the globe have seen extensive use of small arms and light infantry weapons. This resource addresses such developments and provides the insight no command should be without, from both an offensive and defensive standpoint.

Content Structure
This book is laid out in main sections, each of which relates to a generic weapon type. For example, pistols and rifles are part of the personal weapon section, which is followed by larger equipment in the crew-served weapons section. Within each section, details are provided on: development, giving the outline history of weapon development; description, providing details of weapon characteristics; specifications, the technical details relating to each individual weapon or ancillary entry as far as can be determined; and its current status and contractor. The details provided in the contractors’ section are the company address, telephone number, fax and electronic contact data.

Structure
Each section is laid out in country order. Within each national section the entries are listed in alphabetical order. A specifications template is provided for each entry category. It is populated to the extent that confirmed information is available. Also provided with each individual entry is the current manufacturing status, in-service use by country (where known) and contractor.

• Personal weapons
  This section covers pistols, sub-machine guns, rifles, sniper and special purpose rifles, anti-materiél rifles, tactical shotguns, and light support weapons.
• Crew-served weapons
  This section provides data on machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, cannon in a ground role, anti-tank weapons and mortars.
• Ammunition
  This section supports individual JIW weapon entries by providing details of small arms and associated infantry weapon ammunition up to 30 mm, mortar ammunition up to 160 mm, anti-tank weapons and missiles. It comprises cartridge identification tables, detailed information on ammunition for pistols, sub-machine guns and personal defence weapons, rifles and machine guns, special purpose and other weapons, shotguns and cannon. It describes ammunition for three types of projected grenade; spin-stabilised, fin-stabilised and fin-stabilised rifle as well as hand-thrown grenades.
• Sighting equipment
  This section provides geographic coverage of sighting equipment by functional type, including day optical and night weapon sights, and image intensifying and thermal sighting systems. Primarily intended to support individual weapon entries, it also includes sighting systems likely to be of interest to the wider JIW readership.
• Suppressors
  This section includes details on sound suppressors which have been determined to have a military usage. It is laid out in country order.
• National Inventories
  The National Inventories section lists those small arms and infantry weapons known to be in service with the military and paramilitary forces of the country concerned.

Images
Where possible an overall view, left and right image, is provided for recognition and identification purposes. Where appropriate additional images, identifying specific aspects of the equipment concerned, are provided.
