Content
The purpose of Jane’s High-Speed Marine Transportation (JHMT) is to provide a comprehensive collection of information covering the design, build and operation of high-speed marine craft, worldwide.
Structure
Content in JHMT covers all organisations involved in the industry and is divided into four main sections, as follows:
Builders
This section is further divided into the following sections:
- Air cushion vehicles: Largely commercial craft capable of exceeding 25 knots with a proportion of their weight supported by an air cushion.
- Hydrofoils: Largely commercial craft capable of exceeding 25 knots with a proportion of their weight supported by hydrofoils.
- High-speed multihull vessels: Mostly commercial multi-hulled craft mainly used as fast ferries, capable of speeds in excess of 25 knots.
- SWATH vessels: Small- waterplane-area-twin-hull vessels.
- High-speed monohull craft: Commercial craft such as fast ferries and crew supply boats that can exceed 25 knots.
- Wing-in-ground-effect craft: Vessels that use the aerodynamic wing-in ground- effect to support their weight, and have to date been built mainly for research and development purposes.
- Fast interceptors: Military, coast guard, police, customs and workboat vessels up to 25 m in length that can exceed 30 knots. There is a degree of overlap between some large fast interceptors and the smaller patrol boats.
- High-speed patrol craft: Military, coast guard, police or customs vessels, that are between 20 and 60 m in length and have a maximum speed of 25 knots or greater.
Civil operators of high-speed craft
Includes ferry operators, offshore support companies and operators of cruise and leisure craft, as well as coast guards, customs and police units.
Principal equipment and components for high-speed craft
This section is further divided into Engines, Transmissions, Air propellers, Marine propellers, Water-jet units, Ride control systems, Air cushion skirt systems, Marine escape systems, Construction materials and Lightweight seating.
Services
This section is further divided into Marine craft regulatory authorities, Consultants and designers and Societies involved with high-speed craft. Under each of these subsections, entries are arranged by country and thereafter by organisation name. A comprehensive Bibliography is also included which lists all the relevant books, technical papers and presentations that have been made public over the last six years.
Any particular entry may be located in the hardcopy version of JHMT by using on of the three indices covering Organisations, Craft type or Craft name.
Record Structure
The structure of records varies with section. However all entries will include contact information, key personnel listings and company background. This may be followed by details of the vessels or products that the company operates and specifications of its craft (including dimensions, speed, range, passenger capacity etc.).
Images
Photographs are provided for vessels or equipment, where possible. Line drawings and graphics are also provided in some cases. Images are annotated with a seven digit number which identifies them in Jane’s image database.
