An accurate review of important civil and military avionics systems in production around the world today. Jane’s Avionics includes all avionics types from communications and sensors, to data processing/management and display systems.
Content Structure
Jane’s Avionics describes airborne electronic equipment designed civilian and military aircraft. To be included within this title, equipment should be operated in manned aircraft, characterised by significant electronic content, and be in development, production or, if no longer in production, in widespread service. Equipment which is in service in legacy platforms has been archived in order to maintain a manageable overall number of entries in the Yearbook. This archive is accessible through the Online service. The exception to the above is equipment which, in the opinion of the editor, is significant and therefore relevant to the reader.
Avionics equipment designed specifically for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is covered in Jane’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, although this distinction is becoming increasingly difficult to make in view of the development of Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UCAVs), which may be regarded as combat aircraft operated by a remote, ground-based pilot. Systems that are applicable to both manned and unmanned aircraft will continue to be found in Jane’s Avionics.
Structure
Supporting the main sections of Jane’s Avionics, a leading Analysis section contains technical overviews covering some of the core technologies to be found in the book, namely, Digital Datalinks, Airborne Radar, Electro-Optic systems and Helmet Mounted Display Systems (HMDS); these are intended to provide useful background information regarding some of the fundamentals of civil and military avionics systems.
The main body of Jane’s Avionics is divided into six main sections that are easily identifiable to the casual or expert reader alike:
This section includes most equipment which directly interfaces with the crew, such as electronic and analogue displays, Head Up Displays (HUDs) and other Man-Machine Interface (MMI) systems.
After the six main sections and prior to the various indexes, Aircraft Cockpits provides the reader with reference and comparison of modern and legacy cockpit configurations, together with descriptions of important features.
After the main text are three indexes - a contractors index, an alphabetical index and an index that correlates entries to contractors. The contractors index contains details of the name, address and, where available, the telephone/fax number/website of each contractor represented in the book.
The alphabetical index lists every entry in alphabetical order.
The manufacturers index lists entries alphabetically by contractor.
There is no delineation in Jane’s Avionics between civil and military systems, reflecting current trends in the utilisation of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) equipment in military applications wherever possible, thereby minimising acquisition and through-life costs. Noting the global use of the terms ‘airborne’ and ‘aircraft’ in the subsection titles, which must be surely taken ’as read’ in a book detailing avionic equipment, the reason lies in the integrated nature of the Jane’s Defence Equipment portfolio and the online medium - users searching for particular equipment capabilities may not necessarily know of its intended application.

Within each main section, entries are arranged alphabetically by country of manufacture. Entries are structured as follows:
Of particular note to manufacturers, the type headings may not exactly match the detailed function of the system in question
for taxonomy purposes, in order to keep the number of type groupings manageable and members of those grouping at a reasonable and balanced level, it is sometimes necessary to describe a piece of equipment with a more generic type heading. In all such cases I have taken care to ensure that the type description will capture that piece of equipment and all similar.
Images
The reader will find that parts of the book contain colour images in order to more effectively convey the information therein - a large colour image is vital to adequately describe the properties of a full-colour electronic display, for example. Images are annotated with a seven-digit serial number which uniquely identifies them within Jane’s image database. The widespread use of colour in relevant areas of Jane’s Avionics continues, with further expansion of the Aircraft Cockpits section and update of the technical overviews to maintain pace with the development of the technologies.
