Background
CDN comprises the former CFM Norte (CFM-North) lines of Mozambique Ports & Railways (CFM) (see entry in Mozambique section of Railway systems and operators). Via a cross-border connection between Entre Lagos and Nayuchi (Malawi), the railway is contiguous with the Malawi system. In January 2005 operation of the former CFM Norte lines was taken over by a consortium led by Railroad Development Corporation (RDC) under a 15-year concession. RDC had been operating the Malawi system as Central East African Railways Company (see entry in Malawi section of Railway systems and operators) since December 1999; its assumption of the CFM Norte concession enabled it to operate both Mozambique and Malawi lines as the Nacala Corridor, importantly providing landlocked Malawi with access to the deep-sea port of Nacala. Ownership of infrastructure remains with CFM.
