Background
FNM's former Sureste (Southeastern) railway was the third and smallest division of the former national railway to be privatised when Ferrosur, a consortium of aggregates and construction company Tribasa (66.6 per cent) and the Inbursa financing group, took over operations in December 1998 for a 50-year concession. The Tribasa stake was subsequently sold to Frisco, a mining company which is part of the Grupo Carso conglomerate. Ferrosur holds a shareholding of 25 per cent in the Ferrocarril y Terminal del Valle de México (TVM), which operates marshalling yard and terminal facilities in and around the capital. Ferromex, TFM and the Mexican government also each hold 25 per cent of TVM. An attempted merger between Ferrosur and Ferromex was blocked in 2002 by the Mexican government. However, in November 2005 a GFM subsidiary, Infraestructura y Transportes Ferroviarios (ITF), agreed to buy Ferrosur for USD307 million in stock. The move gives Ferromex access to the port of Veracruz.
Organisation
The Ferrosur network extends southeast from Mexico City to serve the port of Veracruz via Orizaba, to Coatzacoalcos, the location of an extensive petrochemical complex, and to Puebla. It is also responsible for operations on the 217 km Sánchez-Oaxaca line (Ferrocarril de Oaxaca), which carries very little freight traffic, and the 104 km Ferrocarril del Sur to Cuautla. Ferrosur also holds trackage rights over the Ferrocarril Transístmico from Medias Aguas to the port of Salina Cruz. At Medias Aguas and at Coatzacoalcos connection is made with the Ferrocarril Coahuila a Durango short line system. There is no connection with the US network, although a freight wagon ferry, which commenced operations in 2000, links Coatzacoalcos and Mobile, Alabama. In 2004 Ferrosur employed 1,900 staff.
