Type
Surface Ship Torpedo Defence system (SSTD).
Development
The initial SSTD system was introduced into service as the AN/SLQ-25, and first developed under a US Navy project in the mid-1970s. The system, also known as Nixie (a mythical undersea creature) was designed along with the development of systems to enable ASW and non-ASW ships to evade torpedo attack. The first production contract was awarded in 1975. These initial systems continue in operation in a dozen countries and are supported with spares and training by Argon ST, Inc. The US Navy continues to support the advancement and improvement of the Nixie towed countermeasure. The current Nixie System in the US Navy and selected international navies is the AN/SLQ-25A. This system, through systematic engineering changes, technology insertion and COTS hardware and software provides a significant improvement in operational capability, system reliability and reduced costs. The AN/SLQ-25A System has been designed for simplified integration with new torpedo defence systems and has automated fault identification, complete built-in-test capability, employs commercial-off-the-shelf electronics, and improved programmable countermeasure signalling.
Jane’s Underwater Warfare Systems
Jane's Underwater Warfare Systems helps track major technological and force developments, vital for assessing military capability and developing defensive systems. You will find the very latest in communications and sonar systems, escape and rescue systems and unmanned vehicles, available or under development, for evaluation and comparison. In-depth coverage is provided on underwater weapons, equipment and related systems currently in service or offered on the market.
