Description
The UPX-719 transponder forms a part of the SMA Intra (interrogator/transponder) system which links ships with their co-operating helicopters. The UPX-719 is the airborne transponder; the UPX-718 is the shipborne interrogation part of the system. The shipborne transmission to the airborne transponder can be integrated with the main radar. Ships can identify up to 10 helicopters and vice versa, due to the characteristics of the coding system. Range is over 100 km for helicopters operating at 1,500 ft.
