A description of the sector
The engine nacelle is the aerodynamic structure which covers an aircraft's engine. It is an extremely complex design, as it has to be moulded to incorporate the engine shape, the inlet, bypass duct, nozzle, cowlings and, in large civil aircraft at least, a thrust reverser at the side and/or rear of the engine. Thus nacelles and thrust reversers are complementary designs and industry teams are increasingly being formed to provide airframe manufacturers with total design solutions. Nacelles are also designed to incorporate noise-absorbent material, fire-warning and extinguishing equipment. The design of the nacelle can contribute hugely to the overall performance of the engine; they are substantial structures on a Boeing 777, for example, where the nacelle is roughly equivalent in diameter to that of a Boeing 737 fuselage. The nacelle can be either an integrated part of the aircraft manufacturer's overall programme, or a separate unit which is procured independently.

Size of the market
There is a current demand for more than 1,000 nacelles a year from Boeing and Airbus aircraft. Military transports and commuter/regional aircraft provide a market for a further 500. As the shape, complexity and materials used in nacelle designs differ so widely between models it is hard to estimate the total market. It is probably worth around USD2 billion, including thrust reversers.
