Terrorism and Insurgency
While Comoros battled a national separatist conflict between 1997 and 2001, an agreement in February 2001 provided for the restoration of a federal state, approved in island referenda in December of that year. There are no obvious terrorist targets in Comoros, although the archipelago is located in a major shipping chokepoint. A Comoran suspected of involvement in the 1998 embassy bombings in East Africa has led to stronger US interest in security in the archipelago.
Terrorism and Insurgency
Comoros experienced a national separatist conflict between 1997 and 2001 as the islands of Anjouan and Mohéli attempted to secede from the Federal Islamic Republic and rejoin Mayotte as French territories. Only the first months of the crisis were characterised by violence between the islands as the federal authorities attempted to retake control, although there was considerable violence on Anjouan throughout the period as factions fought for control. Since the constitutional referendum of December 2001 was approved on all three islands, a new Union of Comoros has been formed. Although the elected island authorities each retained their own security forces, they pledged to work within the union.
