The Genoa-based Marconi Communications, which will remainGEC-controlled even after the proposed merger of Marconi ElectronicSystems with British Aerospace, is to create a new company thatwill include all current businesses related to the military andmobile radio sectors.The move was announced late last month by Sandro Gualano, presidentof Marconi Communications, who will head the new company. Thecompanies involved in this move are the Genoa headquarters; Elmer(Pomezia); Larimart (Rome); MID (Milan, Genoa, L'Aquila); SirioPanel (Florence); as well as the satellite business in Catania.The new company, which will total some 2,500 employees of theoverall 7,000, expects a turnover of some Lit1,000 billion ($540.6million), about half of the total turnover of MarconiCommunications. The name of the new company is still undecided, butthe headquarters base should be in Pomezia, near Rome.The current production of Marconi Communications in the militaryfield includes command, control and communication systems; trunk netradio systems; combat net radios; identification friend or foe;navigation systems; radar warning receivers; onboard computers;man-machine interfaces for fighter aircraft; and other relatedsystems.The new company will also include the mobile radio business, whichis more oriented toward paramilitary customers.According to company sources, the creation of the new company, whichshould be finalised by year-end, will allow Marconi Communicationsto improve its marketing image and effectiveness.Officials said the company would look for market opportunities,although possible alliances with other groups active in the militaryfield should not be ruled out.- Paolo Valpolini JDW Correspondent
