TEXT:Shown for the first time at AUSA was one of the four pre-productionexamples of the German PzH2000 155 mm self-propelled artillerysystem, developed by Wegmann to German Army requirements.During the trials, which were completed last month, 8,185 roundswere fired and the weapons travelled almost 20,000 km on road andacross country.Wegmann is expected to receive an order for 185 units in the firstquarter of next year. The system will become operational in theGerman Army in 1998, replacing the 155 mm M109 howitzers that havebeen in service for 30 years. The total requirement is for 555PzH2000s. The German Army will be the first to deploy a 155 mm/52calibre self-propelled artillery system.Wegmann is prime contractor and responsible for the complete turretand systems integration, while MaK is responsible for the chassisand Rheinmetall for the 155 mm/52 calibre ordnance, which is fed byan automatic loader. Wegmann is leading a consortium to market theweapon to other NATO countries as a replacement for the M109.The USA is in the early stages of developing the 155 mm /52 calCrusader (previously the Advanced Field Artillery System), whichwill use liquid propellant rather than the current bag or morerecent modular charge propellant system.If the programme is delayed or cancelled, the PzH2000 would be apotential replacement, as would a number of other systems includingthe UK Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd 155 mm AS90.Licensed manufacture of the PzH2000 in the USA would be possible,says Wegmann, with the 155 mm/52 calibre ordnance being made byWatervliet Arsenal.
