Training is key for Kuwait

Brian M Walters

Training is key for KuwaitThe Kuwait National Guard has awarded a multi-million dollar contract to Lockheed Martin for the provision of live and virtual training at a new training facility at Kazma, just outside Kuwait City. In addition, the company will develop a Wargaming Centre to develop the computer generation of various terrain. Lockheed Martin UK Simulation, Training & Support (LMUK STS) will oversee execution of the contract from its facilities in Farnborough, UK.

The new training facility is being developed in response to the increasing demands confronting commanders, including situations and new demands often called ‘operations other than war’. Training commanders and other soldiers in the unpredictable nature of these types of situations is therefore important, but constrained by the fact that high costs and environmental concerns make live exercises uneconomical.

That makes simulation the answer, and LMUK STS is drawing on proven technology such as a distributed interactive simulation computer-generated forces engine, which will be configured to Kuwaiti requirements.

Other proven systems that will be adapted to local needs include the advanced gunnery training system, which provides training on procedures, basic skills, crew co-ordination and crew drills.

A virtual combat convoy trainer (VCCT) will be a valuable asset in the Kazma facility. This provides convoy training for drivers, shooters, communicators and decision makers. The VCCT has been designed to constantly test each player’s ability to take appropriate action, regardless of the threat.
