Protected vehicles launched

Middle East Defence Systems (MDS), a joint venture company formed by the Jordanian King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB, Stand OD710) and the Paramount Group based in South Africa, has launched a new family of mine-protected armoured vehicles. Called Marauder and Matador, they were developed in South Africa, but quantity production will soon start at the facilities of MDS in Jordan.
While production of these vehicles will be undertaken in Jordan, they could also be manufactured in other countries under a technology transfer programme or could be provided in kit form for local assembly. Paramount has the exclusive international marketing and distribution rights on a worldwide basis.
An undisclosed export customer, understood not to be Jordan, has already placed a contract for a quantity of both vehicles, which will be delivered in the second half of 2007.
To reduce procurement and operating costs, the new 4x4 vehicles use proven commercial subsystems wherever possible, including MAN diesel engines and axles.
Marauder has a combat weight of about 14.5 tonnes, typically has a crew of two and can carry eight fully equipped troops. Optional equipment includes an air conditioning system, an NBC system, an auxiliary power unit, a more powerful engine, a winch and various weapon stations.
Marauder has a unique double skin that provides for a smooth finish that gives the vehicle a clean, modern appearance. It also has a high level of protection against mines – higher levels of protection are available.
The larger Matador has a similar weight, a crew of two and can carry 12 fully equipped troops. A similar range of equipment is available.
